What to Pack for a Trip to Sonoma County

By Jen Schmitz December 21, 2018

The weather forecast is looking pretty sunny whenever you have a trip planned to Sonoma County, CA. The rustic – yet refined – Northern California county dedicated to all things wine, food, and adventure starts at the San Francisco Bay and journeys northward towards Mendocino County, and it is bookmarked by the rugged Pacific coastline and an eastern range of rolling mountains. Vineyard views and majestic redwoods are also mixed in for an eye-catching, wine making location begging for a visit yearound.

Just as diverse as its surroundings, the weather and seasonal activities are also dynamic, but it doesn’t need to be a guessing game on what to pack and bring along in your suitcase. We’ve rounded up a Sonoma County packing list of essentials and events, so you’ll “always be prepared” for what fun awaits regardless of the season.

WINTER

While December through March may be the rainiest months of the year, with morning mist especially closer to the coast, don’t let a little sprinkle or fog deter you from grabbing your luggage and heading to Sonoma in winter weather. Temps range between 40°- 60°F, so layers are top priority. Come to California during this season for great zinfandels and the wild mustard’s golden glow.

Soft and sleek, toss on for late nights by the firepit or wandering about town.

SPRING

Buds are breaking in Sonoma in spring, and that means the next vintage is much closer to enjoy. In the meantime, the county’s green trees, hills, and vines should be a welcoming sight along with warmer weather from the 40s to mid-70s. Your bag should still have layers, but spring’s blooms mean a lot more time spent under bright skies and far less rain.

Carry what’s important – you may need a pair.

SUMMER

The weather forecast is looking steamy, but in Sonoma, hot weather is dry and easy to manage, especially if you’re spending some time on the beautiful Pacific Coast where it stays a bit cooler. While you may find a morning marine layer of fog, days are typically filled with plenty of sunshine and can vary from 50° to 85°. Summer’s fairs and fests are a great way to experience the greater depth of Sonoma and tastings are best enjoyed on patios overlooking the vineyards.
