While you can’t go wrong with breakfast, lunch, or dinner in Sonoma County, a region known for its locally-driven dining scene, one might argue that in Sonoma Wine Country, breakfast truly is the most important meal of the day. After all, there’s no better precursor to a day of wine tasting than filling up on a good breakfast, right? Luckily, the town Sonoma provides many delicious breakfast options. From family-run bistros you’ll want to linger at all morning to low-key grab-and-go breakfast spots, here are eight of the best places for breakfast in Sonoma.

Sonoma's Best Mercantile

This “Modern Mercantile” is part general store, part wine shop, and part deli, and even features a few cottages to stay in. Located a short walk from the Sonoma Plaza, it’s here where you can order a freshly made breakfast burrito or espresso while perusing the selection of locally-made products before heading out to enjoy all that Sonoma County has to offer.

Folktable Restaurant

One of the newest places to dine in California Wine Country is Folktable, located at Cornerstone Sonoma (a Sonoma County staple home to boutique wineries, culinary artisans, gardens, and the Sunset Test Kitchen). Headed by Executive Chef Casey Thompson, of Top Chef fame, this spectacular new eatery may have a small selection of breakfast items, but they are indeed worth noting — think Gingerbread Pancakes with poached apple; Avocado Toast with egg and tomato confit vinaigrette; Bacon, Egg & Cheese on a warm Brioche bun; and a variety of Tartines.

Sunflower Caffe Espresso & Wine Bar

Located in a historic home on Sonoma Plaza, this homey café is known for its sunny patio and extensive breakfast menu featuring local ingredients — think salt from the San Francisco Bay and eggs, cheese, and milk from local Sonoma County dairies and farms. From Banana Cream Pie Waffles to Coconut Chia Seed Pudding to the Steak & Egg Sandwich, there’s something for everyone at Sunflower Caffé. The restaurant even features many vegan, vegetarian, and gluten free options, making this a great spot for those who stick to specific diets.

Boon Fly Café

Located at the picturesque Carneros Resort and Spa is the brunch-loving crowd favorite of Boon Fly Cafe. Though situated between Sonoma and Napa in the Carneros region of Wine Country, this modern diner is worth the short drive from Sonoma for its delicious breakfast fare, served daily. Highlighting seasonal produce from the resort’s half-acre culinary garden and eggs from the on-site chicken coop, Boon Fly’s modern rustic cuisine features such stand-outs as the Boon Fly Donuts, Green Eggs and Ham, and the Boon Fly Chicken and Waffle, but you really can’t go wrong with anything on the menu.

the girl & the fig

Known for serving up “country food with a French passion,” this well-known bistro on the Sonoma Square has long been a favorite of those visiting downtown Sonoma, where rustic French fare utilizes the best of seasonal California produce, much of which is farmed by their own staff. The girl & the fig’s all-day menu features brunch favorites such as Quiche Lorraine, Croques Monsieur, and a bacon lardon salad with a six-minute egg, but we say there’s no shame in ordering whatever strikes your fancy, be it a charcuterie plate at 11am or a sinful dessert with your coffee. Bon appetit!

El Dorado Hotel & Kitchen

Conveniently located on the Sonoma Plaza inside the El Dorado Hotel, El Dorado Kitchen shouldn’t be written off as just another hotel restaurant. Offering seasonal, farm-driven cuisine, quality beverages, and beautiful indoor and outdoor dining spaces, it’s no wonder why people look to start their day at El Dorado Kitchen, even if not staying at the hotel. However, if we’re being honest, the thought of rolling out of bed and heading downstairs to enjoy breakfast on the tree-lined patio sounds pretty darn wonderful.
