Not only is the small town of Windsor located just north of the Sonoma County Airport, which makes it a convenient place to stay, but it’s also smack in the middle of some of the best wine regions in Northern California. The town itself is in the Russian River Valley American Viticultural Area, and just a few miles to the north is Chalk Hill, Dry Creek Valley, and Alexander Valley. But be sure to spend some time hanging out with the locals in the town plaza, with it’s cute shops, trendy restaurants, and hardly any tourists at all.

The new Holiday Inn Express Windsor is 3 miles from the Sonoma County Airport and, at just half a mile from the Windsor Town Green, it’s the closest place to stay to the heart of the center. Locals love the nearby town square, and most weekends you’ll find a special event there, such as the free Thursday night concerts and farmer’s market, during the summer.

Centrally located just a mile from the Sonoma County Airport and right next to the Windsor Golf Course, the WorldMark Windsor offers a place to settle in for your stay. Part of the WorldMark brand of timeshares, the accommodations include kitchens with cookware, fireplaces, and private balconies, as well as tennis courts, pool, and a gym. Some timeshare owners come here at the same time each year, and they’ve developed connections with each other, so there’s a sense of community involved.

Although it’s just minutes away from downtown Windsor, Woolsey Road Cottage, a privately-owned vacation rental, creates the feeling of being out in the country. The cottage rests on 7 acres of land and the owners keep hens in the area. When available, your hosts will leave fresh eggs waiting for you in the kitchen when you arrive, along with a bottle of wine. They also like to share the fruits and vegetables that are overflowing from their orchard and garden. The cottage’s backyard is very private and features a barbecue and hot tub. Winelight Vineyard Cottage

Everyone knows Wine Country is a foodie mecca. But it’s not just because of the endless array of world-class restaurants: Sonoma County produces some of the finest meats, cheeses, fruits, and vegetables on earth, and if you love to cook, the Winelight Vineyard Cottage is a safe bet. There’s a big kitchen complete with cooking supplies, and the nearby Windsor Certified Farmer’s Market runs most of the year on Sundays, as well as on Thursdays during the summer, giving plenty of fresh, super-local options to choose from. On top of that, you’ll find a kindred spirit in Michael, your host for this Airbnb cottage rental. Michael makes his own Pinot Noir, and you’ll receive a bottle of it at arrival, as well as his own olive oil, which guests typically try out as well. Plus, he has a great garden and has been known to drop off baskets of veggies for his guests. Eat out on the large deck, and then relax in the hot tub later.

The cottage is close to the Sonoma County Airport, but don’t worry: noise is not an issue.

Just a little south of Windsor and six minutes from the Sonoma County Airport, lies the luxurious Vintners Inn. As you drive up, the surrounding area doesn’t look like much to write home about, but as soon as you get on the grounds, you are in a Wine Country paradise. There are acres of vineyards, courtyards and fountains, and beautifully landscaped grounds. Rooms are large and comfortable, And, of course, there is the iconic John Ash & Co. Restaurant and Lounge. John Ash is the granddaddy of Wine Country cuisine, and was the first in the area to have made a big fuss out of cooking with seasonal ingredients and pairing those dishes with the perfect wine.

Make sure to dine at John Ash & Co. and ask to be seated out on the patio. The food is amazing and the ambiance and romantic lighting on the patio can’t be beat.
